What is class like?

Class is all about enjoying learning to dance. There is no need to bring a partner.

We do exercises together, learn the basics and have time to practice with music. We actively mix people up so that you get to dance with lots of people. It speeds your learning and creates a friendly and fun atmosphere.

Class rotates across the beginner curriculum frequently so that you can just drop in.

Do I need to come every week?

It is recommended because you will cover the curriculum more quickly and completely. We know people have lives and other commitments, so we teach with this in mind and work to help you progress.

Do I need a partner?

No! The tango social dance world is full of singles and people whose ‘partners in life’ don’t (or won’t) dance. We frequently switch partners in class. You learn more quickly this way too!

What should I wear?

Comfortable and relaxed clothing. Shoes that you can easily pivot your feet in.

What do I learn in beginners?

How to dance tango with comfort, confidence and composure!
Core skills – walking, connection, musicality, and navigation on the dance floor.
Core figures – the cross (cruce), and ochos.
Key movements – walking in parallel/cross systems, the forward/backward ochos (figure-eights), sandwiches, lapiz and other decorations, and basic turning movement (molinete).

When do I graduate from beginners?

We will tell you. We look for your comfort and composure. It’s important to have this so that you can sustain the higher tempo in improvers classes.

Our teaching focuses on ideas and techniques that are explained through practice and explored as a group. Our key words are how, when, where and why. We always include extended practice time to allow for you to bed in the learning and experiment with it.
